Area 1 News
The outdoor competitions are well underway, so hopefully, all the training organised by your long suffering Riding Club Committees will bear fruit! Please remember there is a grant available if there is something your club would like to arrange. We were very disappointed to have to cancel the Hunter Trials in April. The course was in good order, it was the parking that was the problem. Let us hope that is the only cancellation this year! Please note the definite dates for the summer qualifiers…..not one has the original date!

21st June…………….. Show Jumping
5th July………………..Horse Trials
18th and 19th July……...Dressage

Many of you will have been to training at Greenfields of Avondale, the venue for the Horse Trials. Greenfields are holding their own event the weekend before ours, with training the following day. The Riding Club Rule Book , page 45, states ‘No pony or horse may have been ridden over any fences used in the Area Qualifier during the three weeks prior to the Qualifier’. However we have letter from Stoneleigh stating that as long as the jumps are moved to their new position two weeks prior to the competition Two different tracks are being used for the Horse Trials , and those competing will not be given a place at the training. A great deal of work on new fences is being carried out . Non qualifying entries will be taken so I do hope we can look forward to a busy day.

Whips…..a reminder! They may NOT be carried during the dressage phase of the Horse Trials Qualifier. They MAY be carried at the Dressage Qualifier.

It is with sadness we have to report that North Lanarkshire Riding Club has unaffiliated due to lack of numbers. They have been very active in previous years and will be missed. In an awkward financial climate it is not easy to keep things going.

rosetterosetteWinter Dressage Championships
Well done to Vicky Maxwell and Suzanne Smith who won their classes in the Winter Dressage Championships at Etal on Sunday 22nd March. Vicky won the Prelim on My Boy Flynn and Suzanne won the Novice on Be a Sport.

Area 1 dressage at Ingliston Equestrian Centre
South Lammermuir RC sent a team up to Ingliston for the Area 1 ndoor winter dressage on 28th. The team was Alison Robertson on Gwynfaes Albert, Joan Lauder on Petrof Cafe, Claire Rutherford on Ronaldo and Leah Fleming on Shawhill Hayboy.

Claire and Alison started off with their warm up test in the luxurious indoor arena much to Leah's envy who had both tests outside but the grand surroundings, tiered seating and flash photographers proved a bit daunting for their horses and they didn't fare too well in the placings. Joan and Leah unfortunately had to ride their warm up test after their team test but rode well and gained 3rd and 4th places in their respective arenas.

Everyone rode in the outdoor arenas for the team tests and had mixed fortunes, Joan's horse doing a lovely passage down the centre line when a spooky banner frightened him. The final results were Alison 7th, Joan 14th, Claire 10th and Leah 9th in their respective arenas but the team ended up a credible 9th out of 20 teams. We obviously need a grand indoor arena in Berwickshire full of spooky things to train our horses in !!!!

Area 1 indoor show jumping at SNEC
KirstySouth Lammermuir RC sent a team up to the Scottish National Equestrian Centre for the Area 1 Indoor Show Jumping qualifier on 1st February. Leah Fleming, Sarah de Leon, Ailsa MacTaggart and Kirsty Thompson had an early start in foreboding winter weather to get to SNEC for 8.30am.

The first class was a warm-up one with well over 60 entries. With 13 jumps in the course, it was a fair competition and while we all had a crack at it, we were delighted when Kirsty won the class!! (pictured right).

A few hours hanging about in bitterly cold conditions meant the new coffee stand at SNEC was doing a roaring trade. Once fortified with coffee and chocolate it was time to walk the qualifier course. South Lammermuir RC jumped fairly early on in the first round, with Leah, Sarah and Kirsty going clear and Ailsa knocking a couple of poles. With only three out of four scores counting, we were one of six teams to go through to the next round with zero faults. And given there were 20 teams, that wasn’t bad going!

A couple of hours later we did our second round. By now we were all feeling tired and cold, and were worrying about the impending blizzards that had started on the east coast. Unfortunately, we all had poles down in the second round so didn’t make it into the final jump-off. But a quick turn around saw us on the road and heading home before the snow made things too difficult! Needless to say we all awoke to snow drifts the next day…!

redThe Olympics with Caroline Powell
Thanks to everyone for coming along to hear Caroline talk about her horses and her experience at the Olympics. It was a really enjoyable evening, and was well attended by club members. Hopefully, we’ve all gained enough inspiration to keep us going through the winter months! A big thank you to Caroline for taking the time to speak to us and good luck to her for next weekend’s Express Eventing in Cardiff.
